Chateau Montaigullion is a historic wine estate located in the heart of the Côtes de Castillon, Bordeaux, France. The vineyard was first planted in the 17th century and has been producing some of the region's finest wines ever since. The estate is known for its rich, complex, and elegant red wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Castillon region.
History of Chateau Montaigullion
The history of Chateau Montaigullion dates back to the 17th century when the estate was founded by the Montaigullion family. The vineyard was originally planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec grapes, which were common varieties in the Bordeaux region at that time. Over the years, the estate changed hands several times, and the vineyard was expanded and improved upon by each new owner.
In the early 20th century, Château Montaigullion was acquired by the Boulanger family, who began to focus on producing high-quality wines. They modernized the vineyard and introduced new techniques to improve the quality of the grapes. In the 1970s, the estate was acquired by the Saby family, who continued the tradition of producing excellent wines.
Current managing Director of the vinyard Mathieu Ternault is doing an excellent job, by taking over the reins from his mother Chantelle who herself produced some of the excellent vintages. Mathieu has created his own high end luxurious blend L’Apogée de Montaiguillon.
The taste of Chateau Montaigullion
Chateau Montaigullion wines are known for their rich and complex flavour profile, with a combination of fruit, spice, and earthy notes. The taste can vary depending on the vintage and the specific wine, but generally, these wines have a full-bodied and well-balanced taste.
The red blends typically have a dominant fruit flavour, with notes of black cherry, blackberry, and plum. These fruit flavours are often accompanied by subtle hints of spice, such as vanilla, cinnamon, and clove, which are imparted by the oak barrels used for ageing.
The single varietal wines, such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc, have a more pronounced flavour profile that highlights the characteristics of the grape variety. Merlot, for example, often has a softer, rounder flavour with notes of black cherry and plum, while Cabernet Franc can have a more herbaceous and spicy taste with hints of green pepper and tobacco.
Once the wine has aged, it is bottled and aged for an additional period before being released for sale. Chateau Montaigullion produces a range of wines, including their flagship red blend, as well as single varietal wines such as Merlot and Cabernet France.
